How is the DRIVE from VEGAS to the GRAND CANYON?
I am planning on doing this at night for the first time. I might be a little tired from the 5 hr. flight (NJ) and 8 hours in Vegas. I will try to sleep a lot the night before and drink a lot of coffee. How dangerous is the dirve at night? What time should I leave Vegas to get there around 6am? Are there any rest stops along the way? The plan is to see the sunrise at the South rim around 5:30am before heading for Tucson in our rental car. I know it's not ideal BUT we really want to see the GC and Sedona before visiting family in Tucson and our trip is very short so we only have 8 hours in Vegas before we have to leave. Any suggestions? WHY SKIP SEDONA?

It can be deadly This ain't Jersey we're dealing with here You're gonna be tired and driving at high speeds on really empty roads ...in the dark You are also going to driving in an area where you can easily be 100+ miles between hospitals which means that an accident that you would easily survive in your native 'Jersey will easily kill you out there Furthermore as I indicated in your previous Q http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090731104344AAUiQ6V&r=w&pa=AptqD2bwHTHc6uiDYaA3ukJg_uR7mRVYBjMYQ4Gv8f0QJA--&paid=voted The best place to see the sunrise is out at Desert View and if you go thru GCNP to get there, it's gonna take you at least 45 min from the South Entrance Station>assuming that you don't hit a big azz mule deer en -route Safe trip and skip Sedona <<< Update Why skip Sedona? 1) It's just going to eat about 3+hours of your precious time Assuming that you do it the standard way which is take the Flagstaff airport exit on I-17 S make a right then a left and follow US 89A down the switchbacks and then left on SR 179 and back to I-17S ,you will be on two lane roads all the way that offer few if any opportunities for passing Furthermore those roads can get really packed so you basically crawl thru much of that stretch 2)Despite the best efforts of Sedona's town fathers to prevent it ,Sedona is still very much a kitchy tourist trap , albeit an upscale one ; 3) After you've seen the Canyon you discover that Sedona while cute is not really all that awesome after all. 4)If you want a really good view of Sedona from I-17S use the scenic area that is around mile marker 325 >>
