Long flight to Johannesburg, SA tomorrow?
Tomorrow I am flying from Tucson-JFK, JFK-Johannesburg, South Africa for a mission trip and to do my part to end world poverty. The plane to Africa leaves at 5:20pm tomorrow and arrives at 5pm Thursday! I have NO idea what I am going to do for soooo loooong, I am bad at sleeping on planes and I don't want to keep all the others around me awake. Suggestions?

Read a good book, watch a video.I'm sure with such a long trip you will eventually get sleepy and doze for awhile.Good luck.

take some benadryl...like tylenol pm....read a book or two...do a crossword puzzle...watch a few movies..get drunk...any of those things will help pass the time...try to get upgraded to first class. as a single passenger there may be an extra seat.

I will be taking a long trip next month, too, and pondered this same question. I will be taking several books to keep me company, as well as puzzle books, iPod, and some tea bags. Yes, tea bags! There are some that will help you calm down. My favorite is chamomile, but check your grocery store for others. There is actually a tea called Sleepy Time. The flight attendants can heat up some water for you for your tea. Some people take NyQuil, but I don't recommend it.

*take a sleeping pill so that you can sleep a bit on the plane (if you are lucky the plane wont be full so if you can find 4 seats in a row that are empty you can lie down) *read (books/magazines) *i pod (after take off) *sudoku or other word games *make sure you drink a lot of water to keep yourself hydrated and you can also eat (you are allowed to bring your own snacks like chips) *card games *watch the videos on the plane

i-pod. Movies on your lap top...with head phones. Down load some nature setting stuff with rivers running and birds chearping to mix it up. One of those things you put over your eyes when you sleep...they're black. Keeps you from seeing shadows and changing light through your closed lids. Dramamine for motion sickness...may not need it but it relaxes you ...

Get some sleeping pills, ask the pharmacist, they're pills you can take for these instances that are non habit forming. The bes thing I can suggest is a good book, a Mary Higgins Clark or a John Grisham and just get lost in the story. But remember every two or so you should get up and take a walk to the bathroom, even if you don't have to go because you need to keep the circulation in your legs. Hon, I hope you have a safe and rewarding trip and don't forget to have fun and take lots of pictures, these people may be poor but sometimes a warm, genuine smile can do wonders for a person's spirit. God speed.

I fly enough that I feel like I live in airports! My basics are my music, bible, & some games. If I have room I grab a pillow & blanket too. Long flights luckily have a movie to watch &, if u can, try to get double pronged earphones to listen to the movie or just to listen to the stations they play (including listening in on the pilots). The ones they sell in the airports & during the flights are a little expensive. Good luck & God bless!

Some international flights have an awesome selection of movies that you can call up on small screen. I did this when I flew to Oz. You could also organize your thoughts in a journal, perhaps some concerns that you have about the mission or what you expect to find. This would be a worthwhile read when you finally come home.

Yip I know all about long flights.... orginally from SA and been back there for holidays (I'm in New Zealand now) It can be frustrating when you've watched ALL the movies showing and played the games. Just take one of those 'U' shaped travel pillows, lots of water - can get dehydrated at high altitude, some magazines / books and a sleeping tablets(only if you really really need it) Opt for for melatonin or 5htp if you wanna go natural. Oh and take some ear plugs too. Have a great flight!!

With movies and head-sets for music, long flights aren't as mind numbingly boring as they used to be, believe me..although you will probably find it dull enough to mean that afte the first few hours you can at least nap for a while. I hate sleeping anywhere but my own bed but I did get a couple of naps on the flight to S.A. Take a book you have always meant to read but never got around to, with no escape you should get through a few chapters of it, any sort of puzzle magazine for when you are really desperate, and set yourself the task of learning half a dozen phrases in the language of the people you will be working with..if you have a phrase book to do it with..useful things such as "Can you tell me where there is a telephone?" and "Does anyone speak English?"...and "Thank you so much, you have been very kind / hospitable / helpful." It doesn't sound like much but it can take quite a while to get those first few phrases rolling of the tongue and the effort will be appreciated and might even be useful. when you get tired of simply sitting in one place, get up and take a walk to the bathrooms and back, you should do so during a long haul flight anyway and as long as you are quiet about it, no one should object..for which reason, by the way, try and get an aisle seat so that your restlessness will not bother the people beside you. And drink gallons! Not alcahol, which has a stronger effect at altitude than on the ground, but soda and plain water..long flights dehydrate your body and most of the discomfort people call jet-lag is because they have allowed this to happen. As for inflight hospitality..if they are giving away the miniature bottles of wines and spirits then pop a few in your hand-bag..unless you are a teetotal group..they can either save you the cost of using a hotel mini-bar or be used as a gift...to your host perhaps. You are going to an amazingly beautiful country; I have travelled very widely and never been anywhere more lovely than parts of South Africa turned out to be..and one in which there is so much natural wealth that it is heart-breaking and bewildering to see how much poverty goes hand in hand with it...enjoy, learn and if you manage to do even a little good, be proud of yourself...Oh, and if you wish to give something to one of the many beggers you will be approached by, go into a shop and buy a cooked pie or biscuits or something of that nature..at least you will be sure that the person in question has had something to eat.
